Carmel Niketan, Bidar

In the year 2018 the sisters of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation completed 150 years of its foundation at Bayonne. To celebrate this event, the then Superior General, Sister Susheela motivated all the Provinces to undertake at least one social service project in the Provinces. At the same time there was a harkening call from Pope Francis that religious should go to the peripheries and live among the people. As this need was pondered the Sisters who work in the Mission Station at Bidar felt the need to have a house at Jamgi Colony, to keep the faith alive of 43 families who were Methodists and whom they had baptised to Catholicism in 2012. The Provincial Superior Sister Carmel Rita and her Team discerned God’s will and decided to go ahead with the need of the Bidar Mission and entrusted the responsibility to Sr. Christine Misquith to search for a place for the convent and social service centre.

Sister Christine Misquith after much search for nearly 8 months was able to get only a small plot 30’ by 40’ where there was already a half erected house. Though the size of the plot was disappointing they finally decided to purchase to fulfill the need of the mission. After a proper agreement drawn up between the Bishop and the Provincial Superior, Carmel Niketan was born on June 24, 2017. It was inaugurated by the Provincial Superior Sister Carmel Rita and blessed by Bishop Robert Miranda of Gulbarga Diocese.

The pioneering sisters chosen were Sister Christine Misquith as Sister in Charge, Sisters Mildred, Maria Jyotika, and Manisha Priya Coelho. The mission at Carmel Niketan at present involved in catechizing these people, visiting the villages, establishing SHG’s for women, men and children, teaching tailoring, educating children through sponsorship programme, micro credit loans for self employment, prison ministry and child help line to save children who escape from their home. In addition to these many activities and programmes are also organized to different groups of people. The sisters of the community continue the apostolate zealously with commitment and joy.
